Bessas is a French commune with 216 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Ardèche department . The inhabitants are called Bessassois and Bessassoises .
geography
Bessas is about twelve kilometers west of the Ardèche valley on a small hill overlooking the typical Mediterranean heathland. The municipality is located in the extreme south of the department, in Bas Vivarais , the alluvial land of the Chassezac river , halfway between Barjac and Vallon-Pont-d'Arc . Neighboring communities are Barjac and Grospierres .
history
Bessas was one of the most violent scenes of the wars of religion, in which large parts of the population were murdered or driven out. Most of the houses also had to be rebuilt.
A peculiarity of the community was that in the 18th century it did not belong to the property of a feudal lord or a monastery, but the citizens were allowed to elect two consuls every year.

Attractions
One of the sights of the community is the ancient castle from the 16th century with its round corner towers, which has been rebuilt and now serves as a hostel. In addition, the place consists of many antique houses in the village center, as well as a church in the classical style with a baroque facade from the 17th century, which houses a retable from the early 18th century.
