history
The place name corresponds to the patois expression for sheep's wool , because weaving used to be one of the main livelihoods of the Lanassiens . Not only was sheep's wool woven, many houses were used for silk construction .
The castle of Lana was first documented in 1154, when Guillaume I, the Bishop of Viviers , the monastery Saint-André-le-Haut in Vienne the chapel gave Saint-Eustache. The village was built around the castle in two stages. The first ring around the castle was also the origin of the village and was built in the 12th or 13th century. The second ring with fortifications was built in 1420 during the Hundred Years War (1337-1453). The castle was later destroyed. From 1247 to 1423 the village belonged to the Seigneurie of Chazeaux . After that it belonged to the Seigneurs of Balazuc until the French Revolution .
Lanas received the status of a municipality in 1846, before that it was part of Saint-Maurice-d'Ardèche. When it was founded, the community had 607 inhabitants.
