Culture and sights

Burzet has a well-preserved medieval town center, the center of which is the market square, surrounded by numerous ancient buildings. In addition, the ruins of the Château de Peyres can still be found today , which was destroyed under the direction of Cardinal Richelieu .

The community is also known for the Saint-André church , which was built in the Gothic style in the 15th century and is noticeable for its three pointed naves. In 1621 one of the ships collapsed, so that it could be reconstructed in the same year on the preserved vaulted arch. In 1804 the building was restored again and a new pine altarpiece was installed by Pierre Testut from Le Béage . In 1818 and 1853 new bells and window glasses designed by Michel Chapuy were installed.

The municipality also has a small 12th century chapel in the hamlet of Villard , dedicated to Saint Bénézet . There is also an oratory and an old Belvezet priory known for its arched gallery.

Burzet is also one of 32 stations on the Way of the Cross Saint-André , which was initiated by missionary Pierre Vigne . In 1804 and 1828 this path as well as the adjacent churches and chapels were restored twice as a result of wars. Every year at Easter, the solemn procession takes place here, in which all residents of the community take part either by acting or by making the costumes.

Due to the village's location in the Cevennes Natural Park, there are also a large number of tourists visiting the area around the municipality. For example, the natural open water pool in the basalt basin near Perveranges or the 3500 year old lava flow along the Bourges river.

A special tourist attraction is the Cascade du Ray-Pic , a small waterfall consisting of two rays, of which the first, invisible, falls from a height of 60 meters and the second main jet from 30 meters.

Personalities

Burzet is the home town of Saint-Bénézet , who, according to legend, was commissioned to build the famous Avignon stone bridge in 1177 when he was 12 years old . A small chapel was also dedicated to him in his honor.

Others

Burzet provided the name for a noble chestnut variety , the Burzette .
