Ibn-i Kemal (* 1468 ; † April 16, 1534 ; also called with Persian patronymic Kemal-Paşa-zâde , both in German "Son of Kemal-Pascha"; real name Şemseddin Ahmed Efendi ) was an Ottoman scholar and historiographer. He wrote a multi-volume "History of the House of Osman" ( Tevârîh-i Âl-i Osmân ), only a part of which is available as a translation.

Life

Ibn-i Kemal's father was Suleyman Bey. According to tradition, he was muhafız (garrison commander) of Amasya and sancak beyi (governor) of Tokat. His mother was the sister of an army judge ( kazı'asker ) under Mehmed II. Ibn-i Kemal started out as a Sipahi , then turned to Islamic law.

Ibn-i Kemal was Şeyhülislam (Ottoman: شيخ الإسلام) from 1515 to 1533. His honored teacher was the professor at the Muradiye in Bursa , Lutfullah Sinan Efendi, called Mevlâna Lutfi-i Divane (Eng. “His Eminence Lutfi the Fool”, because of his sharp, critical joke), who fell victim to a colleague intrigue. A legal opinion ( fatwa , Arabic فتوى) of his enemy, the Mufti ( Arabic المفتي, مفت) Hatibzade Ibrahim, led to the sentencing and execution in 1494. Ibn-i Kemal did not note this event (out of piety, as Kreutel assumes) in his chronicle. He was inspired for this work by Mevlâna Abdurrahman Çelebi (1456–1516), called Mü'eyyedzade, a scholar and military judge ( kazı'asker ) of Anatolia under Bayezid II and Selim I Ibn-i Kemal is considered an important chronicler by literary historians and expert in the highly literary writing style influenced by Persian scripts at the Sultan's court . In the older chronicles he used for his work, such as B. that of Oruç , he has masterfully improved the simple style of his models.
