Grospierres (German for "large stones") is a southern French municipality with 885 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) and an area of ​​2,730 hectares . The place is located in the south-eastern Massif Central , in the Ardèche department ( Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region ), at an altitude of 124  m . The place is located in the fertile plain of the lower reaches of the Chassezac river , around four kilometers from the Ardèche .

Economy and tourism

Grospierres is located in the Côtes du Vivarais wine-growing region, a wine cooperative and several wineries market the wine directly to end customers.

Attractions

The place offers prehistoric dolmens as well as Neolithic grottos and dwellings from the Bronze Age . A Musée archéologique et préhistorique (Museum of Archeology and Prehistory) displays finds from the archaeological excavations as well as objects from earlier local everyday life and handicrafts in changing exhibitions.

Among the secular buildings, the remains of the old village of Castelas and a castle from the 19th century should be emphasized , among the sacred buildings the Romanesque chapel Notre-Dame-des-Songes and a church from the 19th century. There is also a distillery for lavender water in the place.
