Culture and sights

Buildings

Chambonas Castle was built between the 12th and 17th centuries. In 1963 it was partially classified as a Monument historique (historical monument) and partially entered in the additional directory of Monuments historiques. Its square floor plan, flanked by four towers, is striking. Numerous large rooms and salons are housed in the building itself. The roof is decorated with glazed tiles. The castle has a baroque garden that was laid out in the 18th century by André Le Nôtre and his students.

The Romanesque church of Saint-Martin was built in place of an older church in the 13th century. It has been classified as a Monument historique since 1907.

A bridge over the Chassezac was built by the monks of Saint-Gilles towards the end of the 13th century. It has been entered in the supplementary directory of the Monuments historiques since 1962, but had to be rebuilt due to repeated destruction in the Huguenot Wars (1562–1598) and in the Second World War in 1944.

The Château de Scipionnet now serves as a hotel.
