The continuous decline in the number of inhabitants in the 20th century is essentially due to the mechanization of agriculture and the associated loss of jobs.
economy
Traditionally, the population lived from cattle breeding and a little arable farming on partially terraced fields, which, however, only produced low yields due to the altitude, so that chestnuts often formed the basic supply. Today forestry and tourism play the most important roles in the economic life of the place in the form of the rental of holiday homes ( gîtes ) .
history
The place, which first appeared on a map around the year 950, had the Latin name Iciliacium there ; Since the year 1154 until the French Revolution, he belonged to a good 10 km away Cistercian - Mazan Abbey . Only on March 28, 1899, Issanlas received the status of a community (commune) .
Attractions
- The church, built in neo-Gothic style , and the adjoining town hall were built at the beginning of the 20th century from only slightly hewn rubble stones. The facade of the church shows a pointed arch portal with a six-pass above it and a bell gable, which was rarely built in the 19th and 20th centuries .
- The simple chapels of Saint Clair and Mézeyrac are the destination of processions and pilgrimages .
