Marianne Bergmann

Marianne Bergmann (born June 29, 1943 ) is a German classical archaeologist .

Life

Marianne Bergmann studied Classical Archeology at the Universities of Saarbrücken and Bonn , where she received her doctorate in 1972 under Nikolaus Himmelmann . In 1972/73 she received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute . Bergmann then worked as an assistant at the University of Marburg . In 1979 she received the Prize of the Philological and Historical Class of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen . On February 12, 1986, she completed her habilitation in Marburg. In 1990 she became a full professor for Classical Archeology at the University of Göttingen . On March 31, 2008, she retired.

She is a full member of the German Archaeological Institute , since 1996 a full member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen and since 2001 a member of the Academia Europaea .

Her main research interests are Roman portraiture, Hellenistic sculpture, the political symbolism of ancient rulers and the culture of Hellenistic Egypt. Since 2003, together with Michael Heinzelmann , she has been leading an excavation project funded by the German Research Foundation in the port city of Schedia near Alexandria .
