Johannes Bergemann

Johannes Bergemann (born January 19, 1960 in Bremen ) is a German classical archaeologist .

life and work

Johannes Bergemann studied Classical Archeology, Ancient History and Christian Archeology in Göttingen , Bonn and Munich from 1978 to 1987 . After completing his doctorate in 1987 in Munich with Paul Zanker , he was a university assistant in Göttingen from 1987 to 1995. His habilitation also took place in Göttingen in 1994. From 1998 to 2000 he was a lecturer at the University of Leipzig . He then worked as a professor of classical archeology at the Ruhr University in Bochum , where he also held the office of dean of the Faculty of History from 2003 to 2005 . From 2002 to 2008 he conducted a survey in ancient Gela . In 2009 the Agrigento Survey was started in the hinterland of the ancient city of Akragas, also in Sicily. The area around the city of Kamarina has also been investigated since 2012.

Since August 1, 2009 he has held the chair for Classical Archeology and head of the Archaeological Institute at the University of Göttingen , 2012/13 Kondekan and 2013–2015 Dean of the Philosophical Faculty.

His fields of work are Greek and Roman archeology, especially ancient portraits, ancient sepulchral culture, historical regional studies, Greek colonization , Roman Greece and archaeological databases. Bergemann is the archaeological editor of the Göttingen Forum for Classical Studies .

Joint projects, in which he partly participates as a speaker, are ArcheoInf and PONS - Archeology. Most recently he works in the joint projects SFB "Religion and Education", VW advance project "Sustainability as a historical argument", VW Foundation "PONS - Humanities and Cultural Studies" (speaker).
