The monastery Les Chambons (Campi boni; Notre-Dame des Chambons) is a former Cistercian abbey in the municipality of Borne (Ardèche) in the Ardèche department , Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes , in France . The monastery was located in the hamlet of Les Chambrons around 43 km west of Aubenas in the forest of Bauzon.

history

The monastery was founded on the basis of a foundation by Guillaume de Borne and his sons in 1152 by the Dalon monastery, which at that time had not yet joined the Cistercian order , and its daughter Loc-Dieu monastery, but because of the distance from it in 1164 the Sénanque monastery , but not its mother monastery Mazan , which is located not far from Les Chambons, is subordinated as a subsidiary monastery and thus belonged to the filiation of the Cîteaux monastery from the beginning (the dependence on Sénanque is however questioned). The monastery suffered setbacks from the plague and the Hundred Years War . It fell in coming in 1474 . The medieval monastery complex did not correspond to the Bernardine plan. Expansion plans in the 17th century were not implemented. During the French Revolution , the monastery was dissolved in 1791 and soon disappeared.

Buildings and plant

Walls up to a height of around 1 m have been preserved from the church. Stones of the monastery are built into the place. The main altar has found its way into the church of Saint-Étienne-de-Lugdarès. Have received three fortified granges , the castles Chabrolières, le Breuil and Le Crouzet. In the grange la Felgère the first taught in 1830 Trappistenkonvent of Monastery Notre-Dame-des-Neiges one.
