Guillaume de Joyeuse
Guillaume II. De Joyeuse (* 1520 ; † 1592 in Aubenas ) was a French nobleman, bishop and military man and since 1582 Marshal of France .
Live and act
His father was Jean de Joyeuse, Vice Count of Joyeuse (* 1475), and his mother Françoise de Voisins, mistress of Arques (* around 1500). He initially embarked on a spiritual career and was named Guillaume VI in 1541, as the successor to his uncle of the same name. Bishop of Alet .
When his older and only brother, Jean-Paul de Joyeuse, died unmarried, Guillaume had not yet received his formal episcopal ordination . In order to avert the impending extinction of his family line, he was therefore able to take the opportunity to give up church service in 1554 and to take over his brother's worldly goods. He was thus Guillaume II. Vice Count of Joyeuse and Lord of Saint-Didier , Laudun , Puyvert and Arques . In 1561 he was taken over by King Charles IX. appointed royal governor- general in Languedoc . In the Huguenot Wars, which broke out again and again (1562–1598), he participated on the Catholic side in the battles in Languedoc and in the Auvergne . He was accepted as a knight in the Order of Michael and in 1578 as a knight in the Order of the Holy Spirit . In 1582 he was taken over by King Henry III. appointed Marshal of France .
Guillaume de Joyeuse survived four of his sons and died in Aubenas in 1592. He was buried in a chapel he had donated in Joyeuse . This has been preserved as a side chapel of today's Saint-Pierre church , and his tombstone can still be seen there today.
