etymology
Chauffailles was called Saint-André until 1274 , when the name Chofaye first appeared. Possibly the name comes from the various gangs that terrorized France during the absence of Louis VII (crusade). According to another version, the name was simply under Louis IX. changed because with Saint-André-sous-Dun there was another place called Saint-André in the immediate vicinity. Forty years after the first name change, the name changed from Chofaye to Choffaye . In 1688 the place got its current name.
history
During the Roman era, a small settlement emerged on the Roman road from Lyon to Autun , which later became today's Chauffailles. The small chapel Saint-André was built , after which the place was initially named. In the 5th century the region was ravaged by invading tribes, in later phases looters came again. As early as the 4th century, the former Gaul had been occupied by the Visigoths . At the time of Louis IX. the Count of Saint-Georges was lord of Chauffailles. This challenged the gentlemen of Charlieu , whereupon he retaliated one night by arson. The place then depended on the parish of Saint-Germain-la-Montagne .
In the late Middle Ages, the de Villon family owned a lot of land in Chauffailles. It went out at the beginning of the 15th century. The D'Amanzé family (originally from Amanzé ) took on their role . She came to Chauffailles in 1383. The municipal coat of arms arose from their family coat of arms. A little later, the family began building the castle, which was probably completed in the first decade of the 15th century. It probably had three towers and two wings in the beginning, but they disappeared over time. At the same time, the chapel became a real church, which had to give way to today's church between 1836 and 1840. In 1718 the D'Amanzé family , which had shaped Chauffailles for eleven generations, was replaced by the De Saint-Georges family . In 1809 the incumbent mayor bought the castle, and in 1836 another mayor bought it. After the castle changed hands a few more times, it now belongs to the community.
