Varenne-l'Arconce is a French municipality with 117 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in Saône-et-Loire in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
location
Varenne-l'Arconce is located about two kilometers from the Arconce River at an altitude of about 330 meters above sea level. d. M. in the old cultural landscape of the Brionnais . The place is about 15 kilometers (driving distance) south of Paray-le-Monial and about 45 kilometers north of Roanne . The worth seeing places Iguerande , Marcigny , Saint-Julien-de-Jonzy and Charlieu are within a radius of about 10-25 kilometers.

In the 19th century the place had over 500 inhabitants at times. The phylloxera crisis and the mechanization of agriculture have resulted in a significant population decline since then.
economy
The hilly area around Varenne-l'Arconce has always been characterized by agriculture, with viticulture being practiced well into the 19th century. In the meantime, cattle breeding ( Charolais cattle) plays a major role. The place itself functioned until the early 20th century as a craft, trade and service center for the hamlets and individual farms in the area.
history
The place is mentioned for the first time in a document from the year 976. Parish and town belonged since 1094 to 1130 as a priory of Cluniac Priory Marcigny. From around 1130 until its partial destruction, the monastery was directly dependent on the Cluny Abbey.

Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens church
The Romanesque priory church of Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens dates from the 12th century. The adjacent enclosure buildings were destroyed in the Hundred Years War (1337–1453) or during the Wars of Religion (1562–1598). The building, which continues to be used as a parish church, was placed under monument protection as a monument historique in 1889 .
Others
A large round pigeon house ( colombier or pigeonnier ) with a cone-shaped roof is in the immediate vicinity of an estate.
