Montceaux-l'Étoile is a French municipality with 290 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Saone-et-Loire in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
location
Montceaux-l'Étoile is located about 300 meters west of the Arconce river at an altitude of about 270 meters above sea level. d. M. in the old cultural landscape of the Brionnais . The place is about 16 kilometers (driving distance) southwest of Paray-le-Monial and about 40 kilometers north of Roanne . The places worth seeing Anzy-le-Duc , Semur-en-Brionnais , Marcigny and Iguerande are all within a radius of about 15 kilometers; Charlieu is about 31 kilometers southeast.

In the 19th century the place had over 600 inhabitants at times. The phylloxera crisis and the mechanization of agriculture have resulted in a significant population decline since then.
economy
The hilly surroundings of Montceaux-l'Étoile have always been characterized by agriculture, with viticulture being practiced well into the 19th century. In the meantime, cattle breeding ( Charolais cattle) plays a major role. The place itself functioned as a handicraft, trade and service center for several hamlets and individual farms in the area until the early 20th century.
history
In 1164 Pope Alexander II subordinated the church ( Ecclesiam de Moncellis ) and thus the entire place to the manorial rule of the Abbey of Saint-Martin d'Autun . In 1248 Louis IX handed over . the place - together with Ligny-en-Brionnais - to thank his companion Damas de Vichy for his support in the 6th crusade . The place remained in the hands of the large family until the French Revolution .
