history

Mario Rossi assumes that the place name comes from Gallo-Roman times (52 BC to 486 AD), is derived from the family name Liccaeus and was originally called Licciacum ('area / estate of the Liccaeus family'). The Count of Mâcon subordinated the parish of Saint-Martin-de-Lixy in 961 to the collegiate monastery of Mâcon . In the 13th century the church of Saint-Martin-de-Lixy belonged to the collegiate monastery Saint-Paul in Lyon . In the 18th century the village belonged to the castellany of the Marquisat Drée .
In 1793, Saint-Martin-de-Lixy received in the course of the French Revolution (1789–1799) under the name Lixy the status of a municipality and in 1801 through the administrative reform under Napoleon Bonaparte (1769–1821) under the current name the right to local self-government.
Culture and sights
The church of St. Martin dates from the 12th century and was rebuilt in the 16th century. In 1950 the church was entered in the supplementary directory of the Monuments historiques .
Barnay Castle is located in the southwestern municipality not far from the Sornin. It was built in the 15th or 16th century from ocher sandstone on the foundations of an older building and at that time had a defensive wall . The Barnay Seigneurie already existed in 1066. According to legend, it once belonged to Petrus Valdes († before 1218). In the 18th century it belonged first to the Counts of Damas, then to the Marquis of Drée. Today it is privately owned.
