Saint-Christophe-en-Brionnais is a French municipality with 527 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Saone-et-Loire in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
location
Saint-Christophe is about 430 meters above sea level. d. M. in the old cultural landscape of the Brionnais . The place is located about 22 kilometers (driving distance) south of Paray-le-Monial and about 37 kilometers north of Roanne . The places worth seeing Anzy-le-Duc , Semur-en-Brionnais , Iguerande , Marcigny , Saint-Julien-de-Jonzy and Charlieu are all within a radius of about 15 kilometers.
history
In the Middle Ages, Saint-Christophe was the seat of a barony that belonged to the House of Semur . The local cattle market has been handed down since the 15th century. During the French Revolution , the place was renamed Bel-Air-les-Foires .

In the 19th century the place had over 1,000 inhabitants at times. The phylloxera crisis and the mechanization of agriculture have resulted in a significant population decline since then.
Attractions
- The parish church of Saint-Hugues , which formerly stood in the middle of the cemetery, is a three-aisled classicist building from the 18th century with a two-storey bell tower on the west side.
- Only a round corner tower with a conical roof has survived from the former castle of the barony from the 15th century.
economy
The hilly area around Saint-Christophe has always been characterized by agriculture, with viticulture being practiced well into the 19th century. In the meantime, cattle breeding ( Charolais cattle) plays a major role. The place itself functioned as a handicraft, trade and service center for several hamlets and individual farms in the area until the early 20th century. A large cattle market ( marché au cadran ) takes place in the village several times a year ; the roof of the hall is provided with a photovoltaic system.
