location

The association of municipalities is located about 15 to 40 kilometers south of Paray-le-Monial and comprises the geographic center of the historical cultural landscape of the Brionnais in southern Burgundy. The border with the Loire department also forms the southern border of the association of municipalities.

landscape

The landscape profile is wavy to hilly at altitudes between 250 and 550 meters above sea level. d. M. The highest place at about 500 meters is Saint-Julien-de-Jonzy; the lowest is Iguerande at about 270 meters.

climate

The climate in Brionnais has the character of a low mountain range - it rains relatively often. The maximum daytime temperatures in summer rarely exceed 30 ° C; in winter temperatures below 0 ° C are not uncommon.

economy

All communities are traditionally oriented towards agriculture. While viticulture played an important role until the late 19th century, it was almost completely abandoned after the phylloxera crisis . Many farmers now mainly devote themselves to cattle breeding, i. H. the rearing of Charolais cattle that thrive on the lush pastures of gur.

history

The Brionnais experienced its heyday in the Middle Ages - Hugo von Semur , canonized in 1121 and one of the most important abbots (1049–1109) of Cluny Abbey , came from the area. From the 12th century, the Brionnais belonged to the immediate sphere of influence of the Benedictine monastery about 50 kilometers away ; several priories , including Varennes-l'Arconce, Iguerande u. a. were directly or indirectly subject to the abbey. In the second half of the 16th century, d. H. During the Huguenot Wars (1562–1598), some places suffered from attacks. In the early years of the French Revolution , the portals of several churches were destroyed.

Attractions

The hilly and varied landscape is ideal for hiking. From a cultural point of view, the Romanesque churches of Semur-en-Brionnais , Varenne-l'Arconce , Iguerande and Saint-Julien-de-Jonzy are particularly noteworthy. Semur-en-Brionnais is one of the most beautiful villages in France . Some - albeit less important - castles and palaces can be seen (e.g. in Semur or Oyé)
