Publier is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

geography

Publier is located at 499  m , five kilometers east-northeast of the city of Thonon-les-Bains (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Chablais, in a panoramic position east of the Dranse valley, around 120 m above lake level of Lake Geneva .

The area of ​​the 9.70 km² municipal area includes a section on the south bank of Lake Geneva; the lakeshore line is approximately 4.5 km. The western part of the municipality lies on the large, flat alluvial cone that the Dranse has heaped up at its confluence with the lake. The nature reserve of the Dransedeltas is located here. The border does not run along the Dranse, but lies west of the river mouth in the area of ​​Port Ripaille. In the south and east, the municipality extends over the relatively gently but continuously rising slope from Publier to the adjoining high plateau. With 725  meters the highest point reached by Publier north of Larringes.

Publier's neighboring municipalities are Évian-les-Bains in the east, Larringes , Champanges and Marin in the south and Thonon-les-Bains in the west.

history

Publier is first mentioned in the 15th century. Much better known was the thermal bathing resort Amphion-les-Bains in Napoleon's time and in the later 19th century.

Attractions

Publier's village church dates from the 19th century. The Notre-Dame de la Rencontre chapel is in Amphion. The manor houses Château de Blonay with their own chapel, Château des Tilleuls and Château du Pré Fleuri are located in the area. The old village center of Amphion-les-Bains is characterized by a remarkable medieval townscape.

With 7148 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Publier is one of the medium-sized municipalities in the Haute-Savoie department. In the last few decades there has been a continuous strong growth in the number of inhabitants. Outside the old village center and on the Dranse delta, larger single-family houses were created thanks to the attractive residential area.

Economy and Infrastructure

The part of Publier on the slope in particular was an area dominated by agriculture well into the 20th century . Publier is located in the Savoie wine-growing region . White wines made from the Altesse grape variety (locally called Roussette ) may be marketed under the protected designation of origin Roussette de Savoie . The AOC Vin de Savoie applies to white wines of other grape varieties and red wines .

Today there are various local small businesses as well as numerous construction and trading companies. Large commercial and industrial areas also developed along the main road in the Amphion Plain. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area, especially in Thonon-les-Bains.

The lakeshore at Amphion-les-Bains with the beach facilities is a popular destination in the summer. The village is off the main thoroughfares, but is easily accessible from both Thonon-les-Bains and Évian-les-Bains . The main road from Geneva leads along the foot of the slope via Thonon-les-Bains to Saint-Gingolph . There are other road connections with Marin and Saint-Paul-en-Chablais . In Amphion-les-Bains there was also a train station on the Thonon-les-Bains – Saint-Gingolph line .
