history
From the 5th century onwards, Franks settled in the region. Childebert I inherited the Kingdom of Paris on the death of his father Clovis I in the year 511. In the will of Dagobert I from 638 the name of Brunoy appears for the first time, in Latin Brennadum .
The feudal castle on the banks of the Yerres was rebuilt at the beginning of the 18th century. It was canceled after the French Revolution . In the middle of the 18th century, an extravagant personality resided in this castle: the Marquis (Margrave) Armand-Louis Joseph Pâris de Montmartel (1748–1781). He performed macabre rituals. When his father Jean Pâris de Monmartel died , he dressed the city in black: servants, castle, trees, wells and horses. Even cows and chickens were painted black. His strange behavior and waste of money led to deterioration - so he finally had to sell the property and ended up in suicide in 1781.
In 1815, Louis XVIII. the title of Marquis of Brunoy to Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington . Numerous wealthy citizens chose Brunoy as their second home. The 19th century was the era of castles and beautiful estates. One example is the castle of Réveillon, which today houses the House of Arts ( Maison des arts ). The painter Jean-Baptiste Corot painted several pictures in Brunoy.
