history

The history of the region can be traced back to the Gallo-Roman era; in Merovingian times, Milly belonged to the Saint-Wandrille Abbey . Karl Martell (r. Approx. 715-741) led the Gâtinais back into the possession of the crown domain ( Domaine royal ) , but the region remained between the crown and its favorites on the one hand and the county of Anjou or the vice counts of until the 14th century Sens and other pretenders controversial. In the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) it fell temporarily to the English, but then it came back into the possession of the crown. Around the year 1500, Milly-la-Forêt was surrounded by a seven-gate city wall by Louis Malet de Graville , who held the title of Admiral of France , because the place had become an important post and trading post on the way from Paris to Lyon; in addition, he probably had the market hall built.
