Montbard is a French municipality with 5160 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Côte-d'Or department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté ; it is the administrative seat of the arrondissement of Montbard and the canton of Montbard . The city is located northwest of Dijon on the River Brenne and the Canal de Bourgogne . It is connected to the Paris – Lyon line via a TGV station . The travel time to Paris is one hour.
history
Aleth , the mother of Bernhard von Clairvaux, was born in Montbard in 1070 . In 1231 the Montbard settlement was raised to the status of a city. The dukes of the House of Burgundy stayed in the castle frequently. In 1590 Montbard was besieged by the Count of Tavannes during his fight against the Duke of Nemours .
In 1833 the Canal de Bourgogne was opened. In 1926 Montbard became a sub-prefecture by decree of Raymond Poincaré .
