history

The Saint-Phal site in the extreme south of the municipality is at an altitude of 306 meters. Aerial photographs show traces of an earlier fortification around the summit, which could point to a prehistoric oppidum . The existence of a cemetery from the Merovingian era has been known for a long time . An excavation has not yet taken place. However, numerous sarcophagi from the area and a belt lock from the seventh century have been recovered. The cemetery has been in use since then. The building of a church in honor of a Merovingian saint is therefore likely. The Christianization took place in the eighth or ninth century.

Originally Vanvey was a part of Villiers-le-Duc and thus belonged to his manor . For more than 800 years it comprised a hamlet, a water mill , a forge, a smelting furnace and a small priory belonging to the Saint-Bénigne Abbey in Dijon . Gilles Buretey, tailor from Toulouse and chamberlain of the brother-in-law of the French king Henry III. , received permission from Heinrich IV in 1596 to build a second wheat mill and a fulling mill . The new mill was later converted into a foundry, then a melting furnace, and finally a sawmill . In 1645 the people of Vanvey built a third mill upriver from the forge. The priory was founded in 990 by Adelheid of Burgundy . It was transferred to the Benedictine order in 1450 and existed until the French Revolution . Due to the industry, the population and the importance of Vanvey increased, so that in the 16th century a troop of 500 arquebusiers could be set up and in 1500 a city wall with towers and three city gates was built. These defensive measures proved their worth during the Huguenot Wars , when 3,000 German mercenaries appeared in July 1586 and wanted to extort goods. After 15 days of siege, they withdrew unsuccessfully and pillaged other communities in the area, especially Massingy . The eighth Huguenot war had the character of a civil war and fueled aspirations for independence in France, as in Vanvey. In 1631 another royal army was forced to withdraw, in 1636 another royal army looted the works outside the city walls, the gates of which were locked again. The city wall could not prevent Austrian troops from temporarily moving into quarters during the coalition wars of 1814 and from November 1870 to April 1871 during the Franco-Prussian War numerous troops marched through the community and demanded a significant contribution to supplies.

In 1882 the railway line between Châtillon-sur-Seine and Is-sur-Tille was inaugurated with a train station in Vanvey. It promoted a boom in sawmills and blacksmiths in Vanvey. In addition to the goods, people were also transported. In 1993, regular operations on the line were discontinued.

In the 1960s, buildings were erected in Vanvey to house Harkis and their families. The men were employed by the Office national des forêts to build paths in the Châtillon forest. The camp was closed around 1970. The families relocated to neighboring communities, looked for a new job or moved to live with relatives in the south of France.

Population development

After records began, the population rose to a high of around 925 by the first half of the 19th century. In the following period, the size of the community decreased with short recovery phases, a trend that continues to this day.

It was built between 1781 and 1786 to replace the previous medieval building. The reason for this was that at the beginning of the 17th century the previous parish church, the Saint-Phal chapel , became a branch church of the parish church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste in the neighboring parish of Villiers-le-Duc. Between 1831 and 1833 the dilapidated vestibule was torn down and replaced by a smaller new building with a triangular gable and four columns designed by the architect Simon Tridon from Châtillon-sur-Seine.

With the exception of the porch, the church has been inscribed as a monument historique since July 23, 1976 .

Among the numerous items of equipment that are inscribed in the inventory of the cultural heritage, there are also two objects that are classified as Monument historique of movable property. It is a pulpit made of oak from the end of the 18th century and a group of sculptures made of painted and partially gilded wood with the representation of Mary as she is taken into heaven between two angels . The figures of angels come from the 17th century, the figure of Mary from the first half of the 19th century.

It is dedicated to St. Fidolus, who lived in the sixth century and was a priest and second abbot of the monastery in Isle-Aumont near Troyes . His feast day is May 16, and pilgrimages were held on this day, with up to 10,000 people taking part in the early 19th century. At times, a bone from the saint's forearm was kept as a relic in the chapel after it was built before it was transferred to the parish church of Vanvey.

In the 15th or 16th century the chapel or church from the eighth or ninth century was restored and a little later significantly expanded. It was damaged and disintegrated during the French Revolution. The transept , which consisted of two side chapels, and the nave were demolished in 1816, so that only the polygonal apse and the crossing with the bell tower above remain. The roof and the spire were renewed in 1903. The chapel has been classified as a Monument historique since February 4th and inscribed since March 7th 1990.

In 1885 a large wall painting was discovered under a thin coat of paint depicting the biblical scene of the Annunciation . It dates from the 15th or 16th century and has been classified as a Monument historique since February 4, 1965 .
