Villars-et-Villenotte is a French municipality with 174 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Côte-d'Or in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté (before 2016: Burgundy ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Montbard and the canton of Semur-en-Auxois .

The inhabitants are called Villersois and Villersoises .

Villars-et-Villenotte is located about four kilometers northeast of Semur-en-Auxois in its catchment area ( Aire urbaine ) in the Auxois natural region .

history

During the French Revolution in 1793, the community of Villenotte was incorporated into the community in the then spelling Velard.

Population development

At the beginning of the 19th century the number of inhabitants rose to a high of around 245. In the following period the size of the community fell to around 85 inhabitants during short recovery phases up to the 1960s, until a phase of growth began that continues to this day.

Villars-et-Villenotte Castle

The castle is located in the extreme southwest of the area of ​​the municipality on a terrace on a mountainside. The cadastre from 1830 shows three buildings that surround an inner courtyard open to the east, the corners of which are studded with round towers. At the north-west corner there was an enclosure that was partially built on. A rectangular, two-story building with a gable roof remains from this complex from the 16th century , attached to the north-west tower and connected to the south-west tower via a curtain wall. The edge of the enclosure is occupied by a wall, the at least one embrasure for cannons with an inwardly facing garment having and points in the direction of the village. The castle is privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside.
