The name of the municipality got its name from the former castle, which comes from the Latin vetus castrum ( German  old castle ). The village was already mentioned under this name in 1140 in the archives of the Langres diocese . During the French Revolution , the name too appeared at the epoch of feudalism with its tyranny to remember. That is why the municipality was given the new name Laure-sur-Serein, which was retained in the municipal files until 1813. On May 9, 1813, the name, which had never been adopted in the vernacular, was officially replaced by the former name Vieux-Château.
