Adalbert I (Vermandois)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Adalbert I. (* probably 915 ; † September 8, 987 ) was a member of the Carolingian family and since 946 Count of Vermandois (946-987). He was the son of Count Heribert II and Adela of France.

Life

Adalbert did not receive disposal of the Vermandois until 946 when his father's inheritance was divided, i.e. three years after his father's death. He supported his brother Hugo in his attempts to keep the title of Archbishop of Reims , but gave up the fight in 949 when Hugo's claims were definitely lost. He submitted to King Ludwig IV and became one of his supporters. Before 954, Adalbert married Gerberga von Lothringen, a daughter of Duke Giselbert, who died in 939, and Gerberga von Sachsen , who in turn had been the wife of Ludwig IV from 939. Thus Ludwig IV was his stepfather-in-law and his son Lothar , who followed him in 954, the half-brother of his wife. When Hugo Capet was elected King of France after the death of Lothar's son Ludwig V (987) , he opposed the election, although he was a cousin of the new king through his mother, but ultimately had to accept the result. He died a short time later.
