Besançon Métropole (GBM) is a French association of municipalities with the legal form of a Communauté urbaine in the department of Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté . It was founded on December 23, 2000 and comprises 68 municipalities (as of January 1, 2019). The administrative headquarters are in the city of Besançon .

Historical development

The community association founded in 2000 last had 56 member communities. With effect from January 1, 2017, six municipalities of the closed Communauté de communes du Val Saint-Vitois and nine municipalities of the closed Communauté de communes Dame Blanche et Bussière joined the local association.

The merger of Chemaudin and Vaux-les-Prés to form Commune nouvelle Chemaudin et Vaux on January 1, 2017, reduced the number of member communities to 70.

The merger of Marchaux and Chaudefontaine to Marchaux-Chaudefontaine on January 1, 2018, reduced the number of member municipalities to 69.

On January 1, 2019, the former municipalities of Fontain and Arguel formed the Commune nouvelle Fontain . This reduced the number of member congregations to 68.
