Vaux-les-Prés was a commune in the Doubs department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté . Vaux-les-Prés is part of the municipality of Chemaudin et Vaux .

geography

Vaux-les-Prés is located at an altitude of 250  m above sea level, about eleven kilometers west of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the gently undulating landscape between the rivers of Doubs in the south and Ognon in the north, slightly elevated on the eastern edge of the valley basin of the Ruisseau de Noironte.

The area of the 5.14 km² former municipal area comprised a section south of the Ognon. The area was slightly wavy and consisted mainly of arable and meadow land; There were only a few forest areas (including the Bois communal ). The Ruisseau de Noironte, which flows through an almost one kilometer wide valley basin, and its right tributary, the Ruisseau de Rix, provide drainage to the north to the Ognon . At 304 m, the highest point in Vaux-les-Prés was reached on a hill in the extreme northeast.

Neighboring communities of Vaux-les-Prés were Champagney and Champvans-les-Moulins in the north, Serre-les-Sapins and Franois in the east, Chemaudin in the south and Villers-Buzon and Mazerolles-le-Salin in the west.

history

The former municipality of Vaux-les-Prés was populated very early. In 1967 archaeological excavations in a cave discovered remains such as arrowheads and bowls from the late Neolithic (around 2500 BC). Ceramic fragments date from the late Bronze Age (around 500 BC), and coin finds testify to the presence of Gallo-Roman culture.

Towards the end of the 11th century, a church or a monastery was founded on the hill of Vaux, which formed the core of the settlement. In the Middle Ages, the village experienced various changes of ownership before it was bought by the Granvelle family in the 16th century. Together with Franche-Comté , Vaux finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. In order to avoid confusion with other communes of the same name, Vaux was officially renamed Vaux-les-Prés in 1961. Until it was dissolved in 2016, the municipality of Vaux-les-Prés was a member of the Communauté d'agglomération du Grand Besançon .

The municipality of Vaux-les-Prés merged with Chemaudin on January 1, 2017 to form the new municipality of Chemaudin et Vaux.

Attractions

The village church of Vaux-les-Prés was built in 1735 in the classical style and has a rich interior. Other sights include the Lavoir (wash house from 1903) and the castle, which was built in the 16th century, but today only consists of a courtyard and barn and is privately owned.

With its last 362 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2013), Vaux-les-Prés was one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After that, the population almost tripled.

Economy and Infrastructure

Vaux-les-Prés was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) well into the 20th century. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the Besançon agglomeration.

Although the village is away from major roads, it is still well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on a departmental road that leads from Chemaudin to Audeux . The closest connection to the A36 motorway , which crosses the municipality, is about five kilometers away. Further road connections exist with Villers-Buzon and Champagney.
