Phife Dawg (real name Malik Isaac Taylor ; born November 20, 1970 in New York ; † March 22, 2016 in the San Francisco Bay Area , California ) was an American rapper who became known as a member of the group A Tribe Called Quest .

Life

Born in Brooklyn in 1970 , Malik Taylor grew up in the New York borough of Queens . As a child he was friends with Jonathan Davis .

Taylor wrote poetry during his childhood and began rapping in school . In high school, he and Davis (aka Q-Tip) met Ali Shaheed Muhammad . With Jarobi White, another friend of Taylor, the four friends formed A Tribe Called Quest in the late 1980s . After the band had released five albums on Jive Records by 1998 , they split. Phife Dawg released the solo album Ventilation: Da LP on Groove Attack in 2000 .

Phife Dawg died in March 2016 at the age of 45 from complications from diabetes .
