Willy Van Neste (born March 10, 1944 in Zwevezele , Belgium ) is a former Belgian cyclist .

Athletic career

After van Neste won the ninth stage of the peace race as a cyclist in 1966 and was fourth overall, seventh overall in the Tour de l'Avenir and sixth in the road race at the world championships at the Nürburgring , he switched to the professional camp at the Leroux-Terrot racing team in 1967 .

In his first year as a professional driver, Van Neste started in the Belgian national team at the Tour de France in 1967 , where he won the 2nd stage and took over the yellow jersey for one day . He competed in the Tour de France seven times, finishing 16th in 1970, 70th in 1971, 33rd in 1972 and 24th in 1974. In 1967, 1969 and 1973 he left early.

Van Neste achieved his best placement in a Grand Tour when he finished fifth overall in the 1968 Giro d'Italia . In 1970 he won the Four Days of Dunkirk overall title . He won the 1972 championship in Zurich . In 1968 he took second place in the classic Gent-Wevelgem .

He ended his cycling career at the age of 32 after the 1976 season with the Dutch FRISOL team.
