Frans Gielen

Frans Gielen (born October 21, 1921 in Wijchmaal ; † June 14, 2004 Helchteren ) was a Belgian cyclist and national champion in cycling .

Athletic career

As an amateur , 1947 was Gielen's most successful season. He won the Belgian championship in road racing before Roger Decock , the Tour of Belgium and Sweden-tour (before Gunnar Jansson ). At the UCI Road World Championships in Reims, he was ninth in the victory of Alfo Ferrari .

His debut with the professional drivers was successful with a stage win in the Vuelta a España in 1948 . In that year he started as an independent , which according to the regulations at the time gave him the opportunity to compete for other teams at starts outside Belgium. Apart from one day's success at the Tour of Belgium in 1954, his further professional career had no high points, he won a few smaller races and ended his career in 1957.
