Albert Van Vlierberghe

Albert Van Vlierberghe (born March 18, 1942 in Belsele ( Sint-Niklaas ), † December 20, 1991 in ibid.) Was a Belgian cyclist and national cycling champion .

Athletic career

His greatest successes as an amateur were winning the Belgian road racing championship in 1963 and the bronze medal at the UCI road world championships in the team time trial in 1964 . A year later he became a professional driver in the Flandria-Romeo team , in which 1963 world champion Benoni Beheyt also drove. He remained active as a professional until 1980 and was in various domestics teams for his captains (including Gösta Pettersson at Ferretti and Freddy Maertens at Flandria). His debut with the professionals was successful with a stage win at the Tour of Portugal in 1965. He was a fast driver and was able to win a number of criteria and circuit races with this quality . In 1967 he won a stage of the Giro d'Italia , in 1969 and 1972 he succeeded again. In 1971 he won a stage section of the Tour de France . He rode the tour a total of seven times, his best result in the overall standings was 29th place in 1971 .
