Leo Duyndam (born January 2, 1948 in Poeldijk , † July 26, 1990 in Nice ) was a Dutch cyclist .

successes

Leo Duyndam was a professional racing driver from 1967 to 1975 and above all a successful six-day driver . In 1968 and 1970 he was the Dutch champion in the single pursuit on the track . In 1968 he took first place in the Ronde van Limburg , in 1969 in the Elfstedenronde and in the Tour of Bern . At the Tour de France 1972 he won the sixth stage.

Six days race

Duyndam started in 73 six-day races and won 16; eight of them with René Pijnen , even though the two athletes were in harmony in terms of driving, but not human. Duyndam described the relationship as “puur zakelijk”. In an interview in 2004, Pijnen described the problem: "Hij nam een ​​pilletje voor dit en een pilletje voor dat. Dat is het begin van het einde." Nevertheless, the two became European champions together in 1974 in two-man team driving ; then after years of quarrels there was a final break. In the subsequent 1975/1976 season things did not go well for Leo Duyndam, he gave up on several six-day races and found no sponsors. He therefore ended his cycling career at the age of 28.

Private

Leo Duyndam married his French girlfriend, moved to the south of France, opened several fashion boutiques and worked as a real estate agent. The couple had three children. On July 26, 1990, he suffered a heart attack in the swimming pool of his villa and died at the age of 42.
