Location and economy

The municipality is located immediately northeast of The Hague and can be regarded as its suburb . Voorburg has a train station on the Den Haag - Utrecht line . Leidschendam has a train station on the Den Haag - Leiden line . The highways between these cities, whose users are often plagued by traffic jams , also cross the community.

Most of the residents of Leidschendam-Voorburg are commuters who work in The Hague . To the southeast there is some agriculture and horticulture. There is a factory that makes elevators and several smaller commercial and industrial companies in the community. Several of the old mansions are used as facilities for people with disabilities, including the deaf .

history

It is possible that around 2700 BC there lived on the parish territory. BC people of the Vlaardingen culture .

In 47 the Roman general Gnaeus Domitius Corbulo had the Corbulonis fossa dug here. Part of this Corbulo ditch still exists today as the Rijn-Schie Canal. The Forum Hadriani settlement , named after Emperor Hadrian in the year 121, was established in the Cananefaten area . However, around 270 the Romans had to evacuate this city.

Around 900 there was a village of Foreburg on a sand ridge and a settlement called “Veur” near today's Leidschendam on a brook called “ Vliet ”. Around 1200 a second village, Wilsveen, was built near Veur, but it no longer exists. In the area, which is boggy and swampy to the east, and whose polder could only be dry-ground by a large number of windmills, a lot of peat was extracted between around 1550 and 1800 . This created some lakes east of the municipality, which then had to be diked again, and where Zoetermeer is now .

The Hague poet Constantijn Huygens (1596–1687) had the Hofwijck manor built in Voorburg . Other rich and influential people did the same. In doing so, the forest disappeared, giving way to the parks and gardens of the country manors. This demand also resulted in horticulture and the trade in ornamental plants. From around 1890, the place became important as a suburb, when simpler Hague officials, etc., had houses built here.

From May 1940 to May 9, 1945 Voorburg was occupied by Wehrmacht troops.

Attractions

The sights of Leidschendam and Voorburg each include a church; the one in Voorburg is late Gothic from the 15th century.

The windmill "De Vlieger" is set up as a museum.

The manor house " Hofwijck " and the former hostel "Swaenstein" each house a small museum (the latter also with finds from Roman times).
