history
The name consists of the elements: Slie = a small river, or; Silt; and; drecht = stream or: water crossing (the etymology is uncertain).
At the time of Count Floris V of Holland (1277) a dike had already been built near Sliedrecht. During the Elisabeth flood of 18./19. November 1421 the place (which was then at a different place) was flooded; the residents built a new place at the current location.
Sliedrecht's first heyday was the period 1600 to 1650. Up until around 1900, fishing on the river was very important; she gave way to the dike building trade. The cultivation of willow wood ("rijshout") as a raw material for dykes was also important (see also dredging industry # history ). Sliedrecht was bombed several times during World War II. On July 8, 1940, a Royal Air Force bomber dropped some bombs.
After the war, Sliedrecht benefited from the flourishing of the port of Rotterdam and the hydraulic engineering industry .
