The first villagers settled around a chapel and a castle built by the Lords of Moordrecht around 1250 and destroyed in 1352. Between 1350 and 1550, Capelle was hit mainly by wars, then by floods and fires. Only the village church from the 15th century was spared again and again. From around 1900 a shipbuilding industry developed on the banks of the river . After 1960 the village grew into a suburb of Rotterdam.
