history

Roman time

The story of Leiderdorp begins in Roman times. At the beginning of the third century AD there was a fort near Roomburg, which was probably inhabited by soldiers of the 30th Roman Legion.

First settlement

The area of Leiderdorp was inhabited from the 8th century. In 1952 the remains of simple old dykes were found.

According to written sources, there were three districts in the 10th century, which together formed "Holtland", which included the Waardeiland, the area between the waterways Mare and de Zijl and the north of the Oude-Rijn area. The first graves were found in the Holtland. The names of the two provinces that end in -holland and the common name "Holland" for the Netherlands have their origins in the term Holtland.

middle Ages

The three districts that made up Holtland were also called "Leithons". The names of the communities Leiden and Leiderdorp come from this term. Unfortunatelydorp originally reached almost to the center of Leiden, but repeatedly had to cede parts of the area to the growing city.

During the Middle Ages, several forts were built in Leiderdorp. They were called Ter Does, Berendrecht, Ter Mey, Stenevelt, Te Waarde and Zijlhof, but none of them exist anymore. The Augustinian monastery Engelendael has existed since the 14th century. It owned large areas of land and played an important role in what was then Leiderdorp.

16th and 17th centuries

The Spanish military leader Valdez set up his headquarters in the old church of Leiderdorp. He had defenses built around the village center, of which nothing can be seen nowadays. When the Prince of Orange had the dikes destroyed, the Spaniards withdrew.

After the uprising against the Spaniards, Engelendael Monastery was left to Jonkheer Arent van Dorp, who had the monastery razed and its foundations excavated.

During the Spanish occupation, Count de Ligne was Ambachtsherr von Leiderdorp. But he preferred to concentrate on his possessions in the southern Netherlands and withdrew from Leiderdorp. Therefore, in 1597, the city of Leiden was granted the rights of an ambassador of Leiderdorp.

After the French Revolution

After the French Revolution in 1795 , municipalities were established in the Batavian Republic , to which Leiderdorp then belonged. These are the forerunners of the modern churches. Unfortunatelydorp also became an independent municipality. Nothing changed in the very agrarian character of the community. However, many rich Leiden buildings built on the banks of the Rijn (banks of the Rhine).

In the 19th century, Leiderdorp began to industrialize. In 1884 the Gereformeerden separated from the Hervormden (reformed churches), which almost led to a civil war in Leiderdorp. The army camped in the village for eight weeks.

20th century

From 1914 to 1915 the so-called oude Dorp (old village) was built. After the First World War , the village grew even further. The A4 motorway was built in the mid-1950s . The Leiderdorp Bridge was completed in 1964. For a long time, the expressway cut into two parts. The area between the A4, Doeskwartier and Patrimoniumpark was still fallow. With the construction of the Oranjewijk, the Doeskwartier and the patrimony park were connected to the old village. In the sixties the old village was also structurally connected to the Wijk Ouderzorg.
