history
Around 1300 BC BC people already lived here, which is evident from the discovery of some urn graves.
The name "Leusden" is very old. It is mentioned for the first time in an episcopal document from 777 as Villa Lisiduna . This, however, meant Oud-Leusden.
The district of Stoutenburg housed a monastery founded by the Utrecht bishop from 1006 and a castle used by the bishop from the 13th century . However, almost nothing has been preserved from both building complexes.
The Hamersveld district was economically dependent on tobacco cultivation from around 1600 to 1890 . After 1970 this part of Leusden developed into a suburb of the neighboring city of Amersfoort to the north .
The heather area Leusderheide became an important military training area with several barracks. Several facilities were built here by the German occupying forces during the Second World War . In 1941, the National Socialists set up a transit camp in this area for prisoners to be deported to the German concentration camps .
