Location and economy

Veenendaal is located between Amersfoort and the Ede , a few kilometers to the east , on the A12 motorway ( Utrecht - Arnhem ). It has two stations on the Utrecht – Rhenen railway line . The business parks in the north of the city are close to the Veenendaal-de Klomp train station on the Amsterdam – Arnhem railway line . This was significantly upgraded with the 2008 annual timetable, since then intercity trains have stopped there every half hour.

On the southern edge of the city is the Utrechtse Heuvelrug forest area , which is suitable for hiking and attracts many tourists.

To compensate for the lost jobs in the wool and cigar industry, companies in the IT sector, as well as advertising agencies and wholesalers, were able to settle with the help of state subsidies. The city's numerous nursing homes and schools also offer work. Veenendaal is a cultural and shopping center for the whole region.

history

Veenendaal was founded in the 16th century as a peat cutter village in the moorland in the south of the "Geldersche Vallei", on the border between the diocese of Utrecht and the duchy of Geldern . The first houses were built along the Grift peat canal and its side canals. House weaving and tobacco growing flourished in the 18th century. Veenendaal was an important industrial city from around 1870 to 1970. On the one hand, textiles were produced, mainly wool - Scheepjeswol (boat wool ) for self- knitting and for darning socks and 3 Suisses were well-known brands from Veenendaal - and on the other hand cigars. Both industries were subject to foreign competition. The last cigar factory, Ritmeester , closed its doors in January 2005.
