history

Gothic village church with a Romanesque tower

Shortly after the beginning of our era, the Romans built an important fort (castellum) near Vechten (Fectio ) with a port on the then course of the Rhine. Back then the Lek river was less important. Most of the water flowed from Wijk near Duurstede northwards via Utrecht to Katwijk on the Rhine .

A trading center developed near the fort. Even when the Romans left the fort in the third century, the trading center remained. The area was occupied over time by the Frisians and the Franks .
See also the main article Fectio .

Around 1125, the Rhine was separated by a dike near Wijk bij Duurstede. The Lek now picked up the Rhine water and led it towards the North Sea .

In the 8th and 9th centuries, the three villages Bunnichem (Bunnik), Iodichem (Odijk) and Wercundia (Werkhoven) developed. Their small village churches were built in the 12th and 13th centuries.

From 1817 to 1856 there were four parishes in what is now Bunnik Parish. The present congregation has existed since 1964.
