Yuri Landman (born February 1, 1973 in Zwolle ) is a Dutch musical instrument maker , musician , music teacher and cartoonist .

biography

As a comic artist , Landman drew two books and received the Breda Art Prize in 1998. After studying the electric guitar himself, Landman played with Zoppo (1997-2000), Avec-A (2004-2005).

Four prototypes

Landman invented the mood swinger for Liars in 2006 ; a third bridge guitar . Although the instrument resembles an electric guitar , it is a flat board zither in that it has neither frets nor a neck . The Moodswinger also has an additional third, movable bridge . The pickup and electronic components are located in the neck and not, as is common with guitars, in the body .

Landman invented the Moonlander in 2007 for Lee Ranaldo of the band Sonic Youth . The Moonlander is a double decker electric drone guitar. The sympathetic strings are not made to sound directly, but rather vibrate at certain pitches and thus produce a specific sound. The electric guitar is also built stereophonically with two rotated pickups . In 2018 he designed a series of microinterval diagrams .

The Springtime, Laura-Mary Carter, Blood Red Shoes

Landman invented springtime for Laura-Mary Carter ( Blood Red Shoes ) in 2008 . The electric guitar is 3- stereophonic with three rotated pickups and worked simultaneously like an electric baritone guitar , electric guitar and electric bouzouki on three guitar amplifiers . Landman had also produced a Springtime for Lou Barlow ( Dinosaur Jr. ) and Mauro Pawlowski ( dEUS ).

Since 2009 he has been organizing instrument building workshops at festivals, concert halls and academies in Europe, he plays with his Yuri Landman Ensemble and since 2012 he has been playing with experimental electronics solo and in the two-man band Bismuth. For his solo shows he had specially developed instruments made of wood, strings, metal rods, electric motors and PET bottles. In 2012, the album That's Right, Go Cats , a collaboration with Jad Fair ( Half Japanese ) and Philippe Petit, and the book Nice Noise , a textbook on prepared guitars with Bart Hopkin, were released . In 2014 the debut album Bismuth by Bismuth was released. In 2016 he built a guitar for Thurston Moore at the request of Premier Guitar Magazine and developed a daxophone DIY workshop. Occasionally he builds instruments for befriended musicians like Rhys Chatham and others. In 2017 he built a sound installation for iii in The Hague in the Netherlands and developed a new instrument making workshop for Lee Ranaldo's Lost Ideas Festival in Menen .
