Sympathetic string
A sympathetic string is an aliquot - string , which resonates in contrast to the main strings, it is not taken directly to the blades, but at certain pitches and thereby produces a specific sound.

The patented grand piano by the Blüthner company uses an additional string in the upper octave in the treble of the instrument above the three struck strings that belong to a key, which brightens the overall sound and makes it more transparent.
