The Frierfjord (also Frier or Frierfjorden ) is a fjord in Grenland in the Norwegian province of Vestfold og Telemark . It is located in the municipalities of Porsgrunn and Bamble .
It extends from Brevik to the mouth of the Porsgrunnselva . The mouth ( Brevikstrømmen ) is 300 m wide and is spanned by the Breviksbrua . A little further in, the newer Grenlandsbrua ( European route 18 ) spans the fjord.
There is a lot of shipping traffic on the fjord, for example to Rafnes in Bamble , Norsk Hydro in Porsgrunn and until the closure in 2006 to Norske Skog Union in Skien .
The name Frier probably comes from Old Norse and means "the beautiful".
