Lieven Ferdinand de Beaufort

Lieven Ferdinand de Beaufort (born March 23, 1879 in Leusden , † May 11, 1968 in Amersfoort ) was a Dutch ornithologist and ichthyologist .

In 1903 he took part in the Dutch North New Guinea expedition led by Arthur Wichmann as a zoologist and in 1909 published the descriptions of the birds that had been collected on this trip.

In 1908 he did his doctorate under Max Wilhelm Carl Weber at the University of Amsterdam with a thesis on the swim bladder of the soft-finned fish (Malacopterygii).

The focus of his scientific publications (mostly together with Weber) is on the fish of the Indo-Australian archipelago.

From 1922 until his retirement in 1949 he was first director of the Zoölogisch Museum Amsterdam des Artis in Amsterdam and then Professor of Zoogeography at the University of Amsterdam.

De Beaufort was one of the founders of the Nederlandse Ornithologische Vereniging and its president from 1924 to 1956.

After De Beaufort a fish genus of the fin suckers ( Beaufortia ) was named, as well as the following currently valid fish species: Aseraggodes beauforti , Cymbacephalus beauforti , Glossamia beauforti , Rasbora beauforti , Stenogobius beauforti and Syncrossus beauforti .
