Kartika Tamara Liotard (born June 26, 1971 in Voorburg ; † August 1, 2020 ) was a Dutch politician .

Life

Kartika Liotard studied law at Maastricht University . In practice, she initially specialized in criminal and tax law . This was followed by training as a mediator.

Kartika Liotard, a lawyer, was a member of the European Parliament from 2004 to 2014 . Until June 2010 she was one of two Dutch MEPs in the Confederal Group of the European United Left and vice-chairman.

After a dispute with the SP party chairman Dennis de Jong , among other things about the division of responsibilities as well as personnel and financial issues, she left the parliamentary group in early June 2010 and has been an independent MP since then.

In Parliament, she sat on the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs and was a member of the delegation for relations with the Maghreb countries and the Arab Maghreb Union (including Libya ).

On March 7, 2013, Liotard made headlines with a draft EU law that should ban pornography and erotic representations in the media. The request was rejected.
