Location of Zoutelande in the municipality of Veere |
Zoutelande ( Zeeland Zoetelande ) is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland and belongs to the municipality Veere, which consists of a total of 13 villages . Zoutelande has 1,570 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) and consists of the core town and the hamlets of Boudewijnskerke, Sint Janskerke, Snabbeldorp and Werendijke. Until June 30, 1966, Zoutelande was an independent municipality.
The tourism is the main source of income for today's Zoutelande. Zoutelande is therefore called the Zeeland Riviera together with the beaches of Dishoek and Westkapelle and, with its only southern beach in the Netherlands, is one of the most popular seaside resorts on the Zeeland coast. Entire streets are rented to the incoming visitors every year. Even the farms participate in the tourism industry through mini-campings, so-called camping on the farm. As a special attraction, ring riding tournaments are held in summer .
Zoutelande is the destination of the Zeeland coastal marathon, which takes place every year on the first weekend in October and starts in Burgh-Haamstede .
Just like Domburg , Zoutelande was also very popular with Dutch painters at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, and the light in Zeeland is often praised. The incidence of light on the water apparently colors the sky more brilliantly than elsewhere.
Attractions
church
The (originally Catholic) Catharinakerk of the Nederlands Hervormde Kerk, built around 1270, stands on a free, round village square with a tower that still has fragments of the brick Gothic of the late 13th century. The nave was built in the 14th century. In 1735 the church was extensively remodeled, with the exception of the consistorial room that was added after the Second World War, which was given its present form. In 2011 the church was thoroughly restored and refurbished. The Protestant parish of Zoutelande is legendarily associated with the name of Sankt Willibrord . Guided tours of the Catherinakerk are offered in the summer months.
The original Willibrordus spring (Dutch: Willibrordusbron, -put) was lost when the new sea dike was built . The well that is said to have been dug by Willibrordus came from the 16th century, according to tradition, and supplied medicinal water . By rinsing the coast, the well finally disappeared into the sea. A new well was dug a few times, but these also later disappeared when the dike was enlarged. As a reminder, a replica was set up on the dike in the 1980s.
Windmill
In Molenweg there is a windmill from 1722, which was used as a grain mill and in which grain was ground using wind power until December 1970. The mill consists of a stone tower with a rotating cap and a wheel cross with a span of 21.66 meters, which is regularly put into operation.
bunker
As part of the Atlantic Wall, there are numerous bunker remains from the Second World War in the area . The Zouteland bunker museum , which is only open in the summer months, allows you to visit two bunkers built by German armed forces in the dunes. This is a double group shelter and an observation post .
lighthouse
The Lighthouse 'De Sergeant', together with the lighthouses in West Chapel , a leading light , the ships, the entrance to the fairway Oostgat has. It was built in 1951 and is 12.8 m high. The beacon is located at a height of 21 m above sea level. The identifier is FW, so it shines permanently with white light. The lighthouse is not accessible and cannot be visited.
Places and places
Zoutelande has two churches, several restaurants and shops, a campsite and several mini-campings and a bungalow and holiday home park (Het Kustlicht). To protect the dunes, access to the beach is only possible via specially marked paths that cross the dike every 200–300 meters and are only partially wheelchair accessible. There are several restaurants and snack bars on the beach that were built on stilts to protect against storm surges . There is also a soccer field (2 grass fields) and a tennis facility on the western edge of the village, and a 9-hole golf course designed by the Belgian golf course architect Bruno Steensels to the southwest of the holiday home park Het Kustlicht .
Roads and infrastructure
Through traffic bypasses the traffic-calmed town center with its small cobbled streets on provinciale Weg 288 . This runs through Zoutelande and connects the place with Westkapelle in the north-west and Vlissingen in the south-east, where there is also a connection to the Dutch A 58 .
Reinforcement of coastal protection in 2009
In the period from March to October 2009, the existing coastal protection was extended and reinforced over a length of 1.1 kilometers. For this purpose, part of the dunes on both sides of the existing dike was first excavated and later replaced by an improved and reinforced connection of the dike to the dunes. In the middle part of the dike, the old stone cladding was removed and replaced with a new layer of stone. The path running on the top of the dike and the wide concrete path to the lake side were paved with asphalt. The part of the dike between the paths was given a new stone cladding.
