Domburg is a Dutch seaside resort with just under 1,675 inhabitants on the North Sea coast . It is located on the Walcheren peninsula in the province of Zeeland and is the administrative seat of the municipality of Veere . The city's landmark is the water tower ( Dutch watertoren ), which can be seen from afar on Walcheren and also shows those who are unfamiliar with the area the way to Domburg.

history

Domburg was built near an old Roman temple that was built for the goddess Nehalennia . The temple was flooded in the 3rd century but was rediscovered in 1647.

Domburg was granted city rights in 1223. The city has officially designated itself as a seaside resort since 1834, making it the oldest seaside resort in Zeeland, but beach tourism existed before that.

At the end of the 14th century, a parish church was built in Domburg , which was built in the Scheldt Gothic style and was originally under the patronage of John the Baptist .

Carmen Sylva, October 2016

In 1889 the writer and Romanian Queen Elisabeth zu Wied visited Domburg. She often stayed in Carl Erbschloe's villa, which is now protected as a Rijksmonument , and which he then renamed “Carmen Sylva” after its pseudonym Villa.

At the beginning of the 20th century, a number of artists worked in Domburg , including Piet Mondriaan , Jan Toorop , Jacoba van Heemskerck and Mies Elout-Drabbe (1875–1956). The painter Lesser Ury stayed in the seaside resort in the summers of 1912 and 1913.

Culture and customs

At the end of June, starting with the Friday after St. Johannis , the fair takes place. The members of the local rifle club De Domburgse Gaaischieters shoot jays, represented by simple wooden blocks that are each stuck on a point of a total of two three-pronged stakes. The middle block is usually provided with a diagram and a political commentary (as with the large carnival floats in e.g. Düsseldorf or Cologne ). Old-fashioned rifles, often muzzle-loaders , are fired hands-free while sitting. The competitions last all day. On Saturdays there is ring riding as part of the fair . This also lasts all day with various competitions.

In addition, every year in August there is ring riding, during which the riders have to spear a ring hung on a string with their lance while galloping. This "farmer's sport" is also known as ring stitching and has its origins in defense competitions between peasants who are compulsory military service since the Middle Ages .

Every year in September, a jazz festival called "Jazz by the Sea" takes place in Domburg and the surrounding area .

nature

The dunes of the village are mostly part of the Manteling nature reserve , which is intended to protect the hinterland in the northwest of Walcheren against the sea wind.
