The Johanneskerk in Domburg

The Johanneskerk (also: Protestantse Kerk ) is a late Gothic Protestant-Union parish church in Domburg (municipality of Veere , province of Zeeland ) in the Netherlands . The church is Rijksmonument under number 13205 (tower) and number 13203 (nave)

history

Domburg was initially divided in the pastoral care of the population. West-Domburg was supplied from Westkapelle , Oost-Domburg from Oostkapelle . Around 1235, two independent parochial churches were finally built in Domburg , whereby the one from Oost-Domburg was moved to Aagtkerke in 1320, making the West-Domburger the only parish church in the place.

The oldest part of the church, originally consecrated to St. John the Baptist , is the tower from the 14th century, which has the typical structural features of the simple village Scheldt Gothic . A north aisle was added to the nave during the 15th century. In 1848 the church was badly damaged by fire. In the course of the restoration, the main and side aisles were brought under one roof and the remains of the choir were demolished. A portal from the 15th century has been preserved on the north side. The Johannes patronage was lost in the course of the Reformation .

The church also became famous for a painting created by the artist Piet Mondrian . It shows the church tower. Mondrian had regular summer stays in Domburg around 1900. In 1956 the church was extensively renovated.

Today the parish belongs to the uniate Protestantse Kerk in Nederland .
