Vrouwenpolder is a village in the municipality of Veere in the Dutch province of Zeeland . In January 2017 the place had 1,065 inhabitants.

Vrouwenpolder is located in the far north of the Walcheren peninsula , from where the Veerse Gatdam connects the peninsula with Noord-Beveland .

history

Wolfert I. van Borsele had the area around Vrouwenpolder dammed around 1300 to fulfill the promise made by his father, Count Willem II of Holland , to the abbot of Middelburg to build a chapel there. See main article: Protestantse Kerk (Vrouwenpolder)

In 1314 Wolfert II built this chapel there, which 10 years later was elevated to a parochial church by the Abbot of Middelburg , with the Holy Virgin Mary as patroness . From this the name Vrouwenpolder arose over time, later Vrouwenpolder (Vrouwe van de Polder - woman from the polders).

Around 1340 the church was expanded further. Legend has it that at this time the church came into possession of a mysterious painting of the Virgin Mary.

After 1416 Vrouwenpolder became a place of pilgrimage . People of all ranks and ranks came from all directions to visit the Parochial Church with its mysterious painting. Even for Spanish, Portuguese and French sailors, the painting was an important sanctuary to pray for calm seas and safe homecoming.

In a storm surge in 1494, the church was badly damaged and the painting was lost. The church was renewed around 1500 and the painting was replaced with a new one, but this did not affect the worship.

In 1572 the church was destroyed by the “war people” from Veere during the siege of Middelburg by the Spaniards (1572–1574) and the pilgrimages to Vrouwenpolder ended abruptly. The church received its present form during the reconstruction in 1622–1624. The sermon chair also dates from this time.

In the northeast ( Breezand ) the Fort den Haak was built in 1588 to secure the entrance of the Veerse Gat . On July 30, 1809, the English landed at Breezand and destroyed the fort, whose former ramparts can still be seen today.

Today Vrouwenpolder is a seaside resort and is also very popular with surfers.
