The Catharinakerk (often just called Hervormde Kerk ) is a Reformed parish church in Zoutelande in the Dutch municipality of Veere ( province of Zeeland ).

history

Consecrated was the sacred to the Reformation of St. Catherine , however, is the patron saint never gone against the Reformed tradition in people's minds completely lost. Around 1249 a small monastery of the Benedictine nuns was founded in Werendijke near Zoutelande , the monastery Porta Coeli (German: Himmelspforte), which was not viable despite donations from the Counts of Holland . Therefore, in 1317 it was subordinated to the Commandery Sint-Jan ten Heere near Aierterkerke . Probably around 1271 from Werendijke in Zoutelande, which originally belonged to the parish of St. Willibrord in Westkapelle , the Katharinenkirche was founded and parish. The monastery itself did not survive the turmoil of the Reformation. The Werendijke church, which can be identified for the first time in 1235, was destroyed in the Eighty Years War .

The oldest part of the Katharinenkirche in Zouteland is the tower from the 13th century, built in the Scheldt Gothic style, as well as capitals in the north wall. These represent the remains of a reconstruction of the church into a hall church from around 1500, with a north aisle being added. In 1573 the building suffered severe damage in the course of the Eighty Years' War. As a result of the devastation, it was decided to demolish the side aisle and choir, which were no longer liturgically needed in the Calvinist church service. In place of the choir there is now a sacristy. The last major renovation of the church took place in 1951 and is now used by a Reformed congregation within the United Dutch Protestant Church .

organ

The church houses a historic organ . The instrument was probably built around 1680 by the organ builder Thomas Weidtman for a monastery church in Limburg. It was installed in the Reformed Church of Heerlen as early as the beginning of the 18th century. When it was closed in 1932, the organ builder D. Hendrikse from Haarlem bought the organ, restored it and sold it to Zoutelande, where it was installed in 1951. The slider chest instrument has 6 registers on a manual (C, Dc 3 : Holpijp 8 ', Prestant 4', Fluit 4 ', Octaaf 2', Scherp II-III, Sesquialter (D) II, Tektivenregaal 8 '). The pedal (C, Df 0 ) is attached. The playing and stop actions are mechanical.
