Commandery of Sint-Jan ten Heere

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Commandery Sint-Jan ten Heere (also: Kerwerve ) was a Commandery of the Order of St. John , which in this day and same peasantry in Aagtekerke on Walcheren ( Zeeland ) in the Netherlands has found.

history

Sint-Jan ten Heere was one of two Johanniter Commanderies on Walcheren. The other was in Middelburg . Sint-Jan ten Heere was subordinate to the Utrecht Ballei . The Commandery was mentioned for the first time in 1313 in a document issued by the Commander of the Ballei, but other documents indicate that the Commandery existed before 1300.

In 1317, the independent, non-viable Benedictine convent Porta Coeli in neighboring Werendijke was subordinated to the Commandery . As a result, the Commandery developed into a double convent of Johanniterbrothers and sisters ("Johannieter broeders en versters") and thus became one of a total of four double convents of the order in the Netherlands. In 1367 the presence of eight nuns in the convent was mentioned, apparently they had given up the monastery seat in Werendijke. In 1495, according to a visitation protocol, twelve sisters lived in Sint-Jan ten Heere. In addition, there were only the commander and a chaplain as male conventuals .

The Commandery was devastated by Spanish troops between 1572 and 1574 in the course of the Eighty Years' War . The commandery buildings were later converted into a manor, of which there are no structural remains.
